Going Back to the Essence: “He who in action sees inaction and action in inaction…he has accomplished all his work” (Bhagavadgita)

The single-mindedness of bare attention is a key feature of practicing Mindfulness. Everything is just basic space where apparently ‘things’ get configured or are arranged in the phenomenal world for us to experience. Space and Awareness are both the same thing and they are inseparable. If sugar is space, then sweetness is the awareness of it. But don’t think of awareness of the sweetness of sugar as an Emergent Property, it is not. They cannot be separated. In fact, space is awareness, and, awareness is space. But space is a non-euclidean geometric manifold within the phenomenal universe or in Bohm’s explicate order. There is three-fold space which are mingled in one, the space of pure empty Rigpa or non-dual awareness which enfolds within it the 2 other spaces. This is Chidakasha, the space of primordial awareness which beyond cause and effect and it has no beginning or end. Then it unfolds the mind-space or thought-space which is information space of all events in all timelines in the multiverse. This is Chittakasha, the realm of quantum-energy field or Einstein’s 4 dimensional space-time, however subtle, this space is mentally perceptible but still dualistic compared to Primordial Consciousness Space or Chidakasha. This unfolds into Mahakasha, the universal physically real gross space that we interact with containing stars, galaxies within universes. Awareness is available in all the 3 space-vehicles depending on the conditioning. The Non-dual Awareness Space or Rigpa is empty, as also the 2 other spaces and the knowing of it is Realisation. Well, three-fold space is actually not mingled, but they are pre-mixed which means Chittakasha and Mahakasha are already present in the Chidakasha in an involuted form. The gradual unfolding is the process of evolution through manifestation. Bohm’s Explicate order or the 3-d space is the world of relativity where opposites impose dual conditioning, splitting awareness into subject and object for experience to take place. This is the physical sensory realm, the information being managed at a realm subtler than it, in the Thought-Space or Chittakasha or Bohm’s Implicate Order. Karmic propensities based on cause and effect originate from though-space of still dualistic consciousness. But since the origin of space is empty, therefore, it can take any form without any hindrance. If form is understood not just as thing but as an appearance, a functioning, a process of manifestation then it enables us to see correctly in a non-objective way giving us the self-realization. This is the non-dual awareness. Finally, ”functioning” itself is void and ”voidness” is ”functioning”.

“If it is no problem, why mention it.

Everything spoken means that,

it’s opposite, & everything else.

I’m alive, I’m dying.”

-Jim Morrison

Moments of Awareness (Dogen’s Existential Moments or ‘uji’) or Satori are those non-linear discontinuous moments of empty congizance cut out from an apparent continuous time-line where the subject-object split is apperceived and transcended. It requires Total Attention and Clear Awareness in our daily life. The prescription for accomplishing this was given by the Buddha himself in an early sutra: “In what is seen there must be just the seen; in what is heard there must be just the heard; in what is sensed (as smell, taste or touch) there must be just what is sensed; in what is thought there must be just the thought”. (Udana I, translated by Nyanaponika Thera)

The attainment of non-duality is the goal of spiritual evolution. Whatever reality the manifold phenomena possess is empirical and illusory, vyavaharika, but, non-duality is paramarthika, absolute and immutable. “This entire universe is the Purusha alone, both that which was and that which endures for the future”. (Rig Veda)

Grantchester Meadows, Pink Floyd, 1969

‘And a river of green is sliding unseen beneath the trees,
Laughing as it passes through the endless summer making for the sea.
In the lazy water meadow
I lay me down.
All around me,
Golden sunflakes covering the ground,
Basking in the sunshine of a by gone afternoon,
Bringing sounds of yesterday into my city room.’

(Grantchester Meadows, Roger Waters, Pink Floyd, Ummagumma, 1969)

The chirping of the skylark, the acoustic guitar and the chorus intermingling with the meadow silence and the memory of the event in the city room are just examples of empty cognizance. True to the song, amidst the silence of the countryside, one connects naturally with the ‘Dharmakaya’ essence through the bardo experience of life, that essence is non-dual awareness, the primordial purity of the mind free of conceptual thinking. At the same time, it’s expression is conceptual thinking. “The splashing of the kingfisher flashing to the water” is one such expression (in the material universe or phenomenal world, all matter comes in discrete units, single electrons, single photons; also discrete moments are entangled with every discrete manifestation of matter-energy) and when we have full attention on that existential moment, we can cut it out from the linear continuity of the explicate order and jump into the thought-space from where it originated, through that with more realization to the primordial essence of the dharmakaya – primordial purity + spontaneous nature. That is our source, we are it, an AWARENESS SPACE OF EMPTY CONGNIZANCE.

“You see time fly

The face changes as the heart breathes and beats

We are not constant

We are an arrow in flight

The sum of the angles change…”/Jim Morrison
